The University of Maryland's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry celebrated the retirements of Professors Neil Blough, Jeffery Davis and Janice Reutt-Robey on May 15, 2026.

A cornerstone of the department since 1994 and former associate chair of graduate studies, Blough is a renowned expert in environmental photochemistry and a recipient of the U.S. EPA Scientific and Technological Achievement Award. Beyond his research, he has contributed significantly to the scientific community as a plenary speaker and chief scientist on numerous oceanographic cruises.

Since joining the faculty in 1993, Davis built a distinguished research program in supramolecular, bioorganic and natural products chemistry. He received the Distinguished Scholar-Teacher award for his exceptional dedication to guiding generations of students.

During her 37-year tenure, Reutt-Robey served as a prominent surface chemist and led the department as chair for 13 years, overseeing transformative growth in research infrastructure, including the new Chemistry Building. Her pioneering work with scanning probe microscopy advanced fundamental insights into surface chemistry and energy technologies while fostering a legacy of inclusive leadership and mentorship.
