Computing Services

The Chemistry Computing Services Group (Chem-IT) supports the Department of Chemistry’s technology needs. We maintain departmental websites, administrative computer systems, databases, and software, and work closely with the University’s Division of Information Technology (DIT) to ensure reliable systems, secure networks, and up-to-date operating environments for faculty, staff, and students.

Our services include:

  • Maintain departmental websites, servers, and web applications
  • Support administrative computer systems, databases, and software
  • Configure and troubleshoot hardware and software for faculty, staff, and students
  • Provide network connectivity support, including data port activations
  • Manage departmental accounts and access requests
  • Support and maintain the teaching laboratory classroom technology
  • Assist with audio/visual equipment setup and reservations for seminars and classes
  • Collaborate with the University’s Division of Information Technology to ensure secure, reliable IT services

Printing

Printing in the OWL Lab is currently free and in B/W, but students must bring their own paper.

Audio & Visual Equipment

Most seminar rooms and select classrooms are equipped with technology equipment may be reserved online. Laptop computers and LCD projectors are also available for classroom or seminar use.

Reservation note: All equipment reservations must be submitted at least 24 hours in advance via the online reservation system.

Email

University email accounts and directory IDs are automatically created when students, faculty, or affiliates first activate their Directory ID

  • Each user is assigned an official email address: yourUID@umd.edu
  • Email is provided through Google Apps for Education (GAFE)

Important: This official UMD email address must be used for all departmental communications, email groups and when conducting university business.

Available Software

Malware/Virus protection is required for all computers connected to the university network. Crowdstrike Endpoint Protection Software.

  • This software is ONLY available to IT Administrators.
  • Software can ONLY be installed on machines that are owned by the University.

Additional Software

  • Many applications are available for personal use through TERPware
  • Users on managed devices(Jamf and Intune) receive many of these applications automatically as they are pre-installed, or available for installation directly from Self Service+ (macOS) or Company Portal (Windows).
