Davis, Paukstelis and Colleagues Develop New Chemistry for Drawing on Soft Materials

Chemical drawings, both hand-drawn and 3D printed, on a hydrogel material

Songjun Xiao, Peter Zavalij, Jeffery Davis and Paul Paukstelis of the Dept. of Chemistry and Biochemistry published a paper, “Drawing with Iron on a Gel Containing a Supramolecular Siderophore” in Angewandte Chemie that was designated as a “Very Important Paper” by the journal ( https://doi.org/10.1002/anie.201910872 ).

The authors describe a chemical method to write, read and erase images on a hydrogel made from a guanosine analog and KCl.  A custom-designed syringe pump mounted on a 3D printer enabled complex patterns to be made on the hydrogel surface using a solution of FeCl3 .
